What is a food tour?

A unique and memorable food tasting experience through delicious, historic, and off-the-beaten-path neighborhoods, while walking with a guide; for locals & visitors. A food and cultural journey, taken for pleasure, visiting places of interest while tasting foods along a specific route.

Who conducts the tours?

All of our tours are conducted by licensed, professional New York City tour guides or historians, well-acquainted with the history and unique culture of Harlem.

Are your tours appropriate for children?

While tours can be customized for school and church youth groups, most tours are fine for children ages 10 and up.

How much walking is involved?

Tour generally last 2-4 hours, we walk at a moderate pace and also provide at least four sit-down locations on the tour for at least 15-20 minutes each stop during the tour. Total distance is 1.3 miles.

Does the Food Tour include a full meal?

While you will be sampling tastings at several restaurants, you will not sit down for a full meal at any one restaurant. Rest assured, however, you will have more than enough food to satisfy the heartiest appetite! Caution come hungry!

What happens if it rains or snows?

The tours are held rain, shine, or snow. In the event of inclement weather, we go inside of all the establishments on the tour. However, we advise to check the weather conditions for your days event and dress appropriately. Walking tours will only be cancelled if the weather is severe enough to prohibit walking safely and comfortably.

Are tours offered only in English?

Yes, we only offer tours in English at this time. Please email us if you would like to make arrangements for your own interpreter to join the tour or if you are interested in a tour in a different language as we are able to accommodate most requests ahead of time.

What types of foods are served on the tour?

What restaurants will we visit on the tour?

A list of the current tasting locations are not listed because they are subject to change. 

Do I have to purchase tickets in advance? Can I pay cash?

Tickets must be purchased in advance, and tours often sell out quickly. To maximize your chances of getting the day and time you prefer, please book well in advance. Tickets can only be purchased with a Visa, Mastercard or American Express.

Do I need to purchase a ticket if I’m not eating?

Yes- all guests must purchase a ticket whether they plan to partake in the food tastings or not. Non-paying individuals will not able to join the tour for any reason(s). The ticket fees help cover the costs of all the food samplings and also to pay for your tour guide(s) wages, whom are offering valuable commentary on historical, architectural, cultural and restaurant information during the tour.

When is the best time to take the tour?

We highly recommend taking our food tours at the beginning of your visit so you allow plenty of time to revisit the especially the off-the-beaten-path and also enjoy returning to you favorite food tasting locations.

What if I have dietary restrictions?

Please be sure and let us know if you (or anyone in your group) have dietary restrictions (e.g. vegetarian, diabetic, etc.) when you purchase your tickets. As long as we know well in advance, we will try to accommodate your needs.

Are there kosher options on the tour?

No, we do not offer kosher options at this time.

What type of ticket should I buy if I’m bringing a very young child?

If you are bringing a child ages 5 and younger, you do not need to purchase a ticket for him/her, as long as your child does not participate in the tastings and will sit on your lap during the tour. Please indicate the number of non-paying children that are attending with you when you purchase tickets.

Is the tour wheel chair and baby stroller accessible?

Yes, the food tasting establishments are wheelchair and baby stroller friendly and accessible.

Does the tour leader accept gratuities?

Gratuities are greatly appreciated, although not mandatory. The standard gratuity in the service industry is 18%-20%.

Are there any beverages served on the tour?

Each guest receives a bottle of water at the start of the tour.

Do we only walk around and sample food?

Absolutely not! Taste Harlem combines architectural commentary, historical facts, local culture and culinary insight into a unique experience. Imagine walking through Harlem eating our local most delicious foods while learning the neighborhood from real locals. Is wine tasting included on the tour?

Depending on the day and time of the tour, wine tasting may be offered.

Can I shop on the tour?

We will have a brief shopping stop. If you should need additional shopping time, we will provide you with directions for after the tour so that we can stay on schedule and continue with the informative tour and food tastings in a timely manner. We ask that you allow time at the end of the tour to return to your favorite locations and/or stores.

Are bathrooms available during the tour?

Yes, restroom stops are available throughout the tour.

Are cameras allowed on the tour?

Yes. Cameras and filming are allowed during the tour. We strongly encourage participants to take photos during the tour. It is rare when it is not allowed your tour guides will announce.

Does the tour end at the same place we meet?

Yes, the tours finish very close to the starting point.

Is there parking nearby the tour meeting point?

Yes, there is parking located near the meeting point. Specific parking details are included in the meeting location directions after purchasing tickets.

Does this tour have anything to offer a native Harlem resident?

Absolutely! Many of our attendees live here in Harlem.

Are tours offered only in English?

Yes, we only offer tours in English at this time. Please click on the “Contact this Seller” link if you would like to make arrangements for your own interpreter to join the tour.
